i'm trying to become a letter-writer. i find that i'm really pretty good at writing letters (it used to be something i practiced with reasonable frequency), but not so good at sending them. (case in point: i found a postcard that i had written, addressed, and stamped to my friends hannah and chuck - but never sent. i have no idea when i wrote it, but it referenced the fact that i was hoping to be back in boston in june. which, incidentally, already happened. in fact, the first thing i did when i got off the plane (other than getting my rental car and stopping by dunks), was go find hannah & chuck & their daughter penelope. i guess i could still send them the postcard, but it might be confusing.) still, i remain determined. i like writing letters. and i have received a couple of letters in the past month, which reminded me of how nice it is to get real mail from a real person who has it together enough to really post something. besides, i've always believed there's something magical about the handwriting of people you love. (i'm not sure what specific magical powers it contains, but i'm sure they're the nicest kind.) so if i can in turn bestow this unspecific mystical gift on someone i care about, shouldn't i do so? i think so. but as of yet, i have sent only one letter successfully, and i have two others in progress, nowhere near being mailed. ah well.
i am registered to run a 5K on sunday. it will probably be embarrassing. i've decided i'm okay with that.
it will be a busy weekend... the sustainability fair is in town, and i want to at least attend the talk on art, science, and sustainability at the contemporary art museum. i'll need to do my usual church-attending, sunday-school-teaching, financial-peacing, drama-team-assisting stuff, of course. and then there's the sustainability fair, and the 5K, and an engagement party, and i need to act (thankfully, only briefly) on saturday nite for kids' church. acting is not one of my most favourite things, but from what debbie said, what i need to do sounds a lot like what i do in my living room all day every day. and anyway, let's face it: i am a sucker for people who ask nicely.
sometimes i wonder if i'm too easily amazed. when the guys from church fixed my car on saturday, i was amazed. when teresa cooked homemade pizzas for us on sunday nite, i was amazed. (i was even more amazed when she pulled out fancy decorated cupcakes for dessert. although they had baby booties on them, so i'm pretty sure they weren't specifically made for me and courtney.) i just get totally floored when people take care of me in ways that i'm not capable of taking care of myself. there's no way to make it even. i can't turn around and repair their exhaust pipe for them. i can't invite teresa over for a casserole. (i mean, i guess i could, if she likes my specialty, Imaginary Casserole.) and these people obviously know this about me. they are doing something kind for me with the full knowledge that i can't repay them. and that is just so mind-blowingly good. it's the sort of thing that lifts a noticeable chunk of weight off my life... some of the weight gets lifted because i don't have to worry about what i'm going to eat that nite, or how i'm going to get to work if it starts snowing. but i think most of it gets lifted off just by getting some empirical evidence that, yes, people like that do exist.
it's a pretty good thing.
