yesterday morning the fog hung unusually thick outside, but i was happy because i had just enough time to walk to work (my preferred mode of transportation), and i had a mug of green tea in my hand. it reminded me a bit of england, a bit of the north shore. the whole walk in, i had the phrase "a glooming peace this morning with it brings" running through my head, but couldn't remember what it was from. sad day, english major.
at my office, a little deaf girl and i are joking around with each other. she gives me a dollar, and i hide it and proceed to offer her all of the lost-and-found items on my desk, one after another. after eventually deciding that none of the items are worth a dollar, she wants said dollar back. (i reluctantly acquiesce. please note that i am not the kind of person who steals money from three-year-olds who are hard of hearing. )
"come play with me," her mom signs to her. "jessy needs to work."
"no," the little girl signs back. "she lives here!"
"i do not live here," i protest.
the little girl grins knowingly at me. "i think she does," she mouths to her mother, with a whole mess of laughter in her eyes.
(some days i get frustrated at work. but there is something about it that is in the right place, you know? and i think it is getting better as i try to make more places into places i can stay.)
